Ian De Haes

Ian was born in Belgium. He is the third in a family of four children. He grew up in the countryside, in an environment that left plenty of room for the imagination. He is very attracted to books, and devours all comics in the library.

He liked to draw from a young age and took his first painting classes in the village where he grew up. He studied computer graphics and finished first in his section. But frustrated by the low level of drawing classes, he enrolled in an illustration degree in Brussels. He spent a year there, before stopping for various reasons.

Ian began working as a youth bookseller without giving up painting. A small seed was planted. This interest in literature turned into a project a few years later, when he met Charlotte Bellière, his partner. She is a French teacher and loves to write. She wrote her first story for Ian to illustrate in 2011. This was their first picture book, thanks to the publisher Alice Jeunesse.

Charlotte and Ian made more picture books together, while Ian continued his work as a part-time bookseller. Ian also wrote and illustrated Simon and the Big, Bad, Angry Beasts, a success. He made the decision to leave his bookseller's job in 2017, following the deterioration of working conditions and his growing desire to devote more time to the creation of children's books.

Ian and Charlotte have two girls who are their main source of inspiration. Their stories are sometimes funny, sometimes poetic.
